We are often asked what it is exactly that microcurrent technology does. Through our extensive research into this brilliant technology, we have found many papers detailing the effect microcurrent has within a body.

Physiological Basis of Microcurrent Therapy by Peter H. Lathrop, Ph.D

Microcurrent Therapy is low-volt pulsed micro-amperage stimulation. It is based on the hypothesis that micro-amperage currents more closely approximate the naturally occurring bioelectric currents in the body and therefore more effectively augment the body’s tissue healing and repair. Studies also indicate human tissue appears to heal more rapidly with micro-current application.

Bioelectric currents in the body are generally found to be in the micro-amp range. Changes in the bioelectric voltage potentials across muscle cell membranes allow for more efficient membrane transport and metabolic processes. The cell's increased permeability to sodium ions is followed by an increased permeability to potassium ions. Energy is needed for these activities to occur within the muscle fibre. When a local stimulus is applied to the nearby surrounding membrane, changes occur in the ionic conductance of the membrane, which tend to restore the resting potential even if the stimulus persists.

Three variables critical to the healing process are ATP (adenosine triphosphate), protein synthesis, and membrane transport.

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) concentration serves a direct vital function in the "active transport" mechanism known as the Sodium Pump. The Sodium Pump is directly responsible for the trans-membrane movement of sodium, potassium, calcium, metabolic waste and metabolites. Active Transport means that this system requires large amounts of energy to move vital ions in and out of the cell. If this energy is unavailable, metabolic waste builds up in toxic concentrations.

An injury or trauma to a muscle decreases ATP and causes spasm, which results in decreased oxygen and nutrients to the cells. It also disrupts the sodium pump, which results in the accumulation of metabolic by-products. All of these events are perceived by an individual as pain.

Damaged tissue cells produce an electrical current through the loss of intracellular ions and the disruption of the sodium pump mechanism. The current then changes the normal electrical potential patterns. The uninjured cells attempt to restore normal function to the damaged tissues by restoring the normal electrical potential.

Re-establishment of the sodium pump, either naturally or by micro-current stimulation, occurs when the increase in intracellular current creates increased mitochondrial function, which enhances the cell's concentration of ATP. When ATP is replenished in injured tissues, the membrane active transport is increased, allowing the flow of nutrients into the cells and the flow of waste materials from the cells. With this process, healthy tissue emerges.

Microcurrent stimulation also increases the ability of the cell to synthesize protein. ATP provides the fuel for the transmigration of metabolite and metabolic waste across the cell membranes as well as the re-establishment of the cellular bio-electronic ionic concentration gradient. What this means is that cell membrane potential is re-established, levels of intracellular metabolic waste (i.e. lactic acid) are reduced and fresh concentrations of usable cellular metabolites are introduced into the exhausted cell. At this point the cell can enter its regenerative phase and pain levels are noticeably reduced.

The electric message is carried along the nerves as a result of changes in the quantities of potassium and sodium salts inside and outside the cell. Outside the cell is an abundance of sodium salt and little potassium; inside is an abundance of potassium and little sodium. The effect is like that of a wet battery where different solutions separated by a semi-permeable membrane give rise to an electric current. Each cell can be viewed as possessing its own immediate electro-magnetic environment that combines with the fields of similar adjacent cells, thereby creating the electro-magnetic field of a particular system within the human body. The cell in the living organism is like a small electric battery with the mitochondria as the powerhouse. All functions of the human body are electro-chemical in their operations

The mitochondria provide the fuel for the transmigration of metabolite and metabolic waste across the cell membranes. The increased activity of the mitochondria enhances the production of ATP in the cytoplasm and the establishment of the cellular bio-electronic ionic concentration gradient. So the cell membrane potential is re-established and pain levels are noticeably reduced. At this point the cell can enter its regenerative phase.

Nerve fibres normally operate electrically; using the flow of positively charged ions through water in the same way that electronic circuits use the flow of negatively charged electrons through metal conductors. This means that externally applied electrical currents can influence neurons.

Regeneration is a series of endothermic and electrochemical reactions. This means that minute amounts of electricity are needed by the cells to provide energy to fuel the regenerative process. The body normally contains more than enough energy to produce this desired effect.

After the body receives bioelectric therapy, there is electronic input into various points regulating the functioning of cells and neuro-muscular systems of the body. Glycogen utilisation of the muscle tissue increases and the amino acid content of the brain tissue also increases. At the same time, activities of some enzymes in the tissue become stronger. These changes indicate that treatment can promote the metabolic process of tissues in their movement to help invigorate the body's power of resistance, thereby promoting the recovery of damaged tissues.

One of the reasons micro-current treatment is becoming more widely used is the patient comfort factor. With micro-current, tissue resistance is overcome utilising a much lower voltage than other types of electrotherapy. With such low voltages, the patient feels no discomfort, and, in fact, often feels no sensation at all from the treatment.

Bioelectric stimulation produces electrochemical changes in the body that set the stage for healing. With recharged cellular batteries, the body can take over and perform the healing of which it is capable.

Chapeau's Story from one of our brilliant Agents

Chapeau's story as written by Kathy Serio, an ArcEquine Agent


Chapeau is an 8yr old Dutch warmblood, by Indoctro, out of an Indorado mare, that I imported from Holland.

Here is his some of his story:

Chapeau definitely hasn't been the easiest horse in the world over the last few years, but we have learned A LOT by listening to him. I'm proud to have been able to bring him this far, from an unbroken 2 yr old stallion, to today...

Even the "breaking" process wasn't without problems, as he used to have fear issues with people "above him". You couldn't pat him if you were sitting on him, and say good boy, and God forbid if you forgot WHO you were on, and swatted a fly, you'd be a goner- NEVER bucking, just rearing. He had a late start at 4 1/2 yrs of age, as he seemed immature.

I came off backwards from him at least 5 times while he stood straight up in fear (and sometimes anger)...and when I tried to wrap my arms around his neck to push him down, he'd freak out more and spin while rearing, more afraid of me above him than anything.

He was the ride you couldn't "mount" nor "dismount"! He was afraid of his own hair falling on him when being body clipped....I had to twitch him to fly spray him for 3 weeks when he came from Holland. He hurt his leg immediately, and needed it to be wrapped, and we had to twitch him to re-bandage.

He's been tough, we held in and made it work. Those days are over, although a few quirks remain...He STILL hates any spray bottle and no hosing face.
He hates to be rushed and man handled to do anything, but he will do anything and behave for his favorite person, his vet, Leah Patipa Beccar Varela, but if someone else goes in and tries to twitch him and rush him- look out- you'll be face planted by front feet. I've learned he hated to be rushed into a "handy hunter" class too- the first few handy classes I picked up the canter, quickly and he reared straight up....now we are ok with that. He is also the slowest walker in the world and doesn't like to be hurried at all.

Once, a few years ago, I brought him for Tommy Serio, to ride- he was green broke. At the flying change he took off like a bat out of hell because Tommy's reading glasses fell on him from up above him, out of his pocket. Tommy hated him, Chapeau knew it, (he is wicked smart) and hated him back....

His very first schooling show, I showed him in a German Martingale (not allowed in the Hunter Ring, but I wasn't taking it off!) - he kicked out at every lead change and reared at the flower boxes blowing in the wind as he cantered by sideways. It was a long road to hoe....

Two years ago we couldn't get him around the arena -at HOME-without spinning and rearing every few strides, although he did jump OUT of the arena, then back in. Re-castration surgery for adhesions helped that a little bit though! I do think it has been a lot of "trust" and consistency"....I never gave up and always loved him, as he was all I had. Now, he almost "looks for me" when he's worried.

From 4 1/2 to 6 years of age, he simply could NOT canter around an arena. He'd have his head straight in the air and start screaming if you cantered more than 3 times around the arena, or attempted to take a feel of his mouth, he'd become VERY distressed. We scoped him, nada. This might have been related to adhesions from castration.....I always gave him the benefit of the doubt and looked to "pain" as his issue.

The one thing he liked to do and was never worried about was jumping. We started jumping and hoped the canter would improve over time and slowly this has happened....

You could trail ride him all day long from Day 1- afraid of nothing- but the work ethic was far from stellar....if you pushed him too much, he'd scream like he was dying (really, not just a "neigh", he'd SCREAM!). He STILL screams when he hits the 15 minute mark on a lunge line.

In September 2014, I bought a 3rd ArcEquine machine and used it specifically for Chapeau. My husband received it at his farm in VA, I have a full time job selling Adequan in Florida and Georgia, so I drove up to meet him at a horse show. I hadn't ridden in about 3 weeks- the longest ever. I got on the day before to school and it was odd but I had to grab a little mane in the warm up ring, as my husband, my trainer, was setting the jumps bigger and bigger. A fellow trainer walked over and asked about him- how he was bred, because his knees were to his eyeballs. Chapeau has always been scopey, although he can still jump a little "belly low". After we walked back to the barn, my husband said the only thing different he did with him while I was in Florida, was put the machine on him for the week prior. Of course, like many men (!), he didn't read the directions and thought I said P1+++ and P4+++. This was the setting he was on and he jumped amazing- used his neck, his shoulder and his back better- really tried hard. We had the best score ever- an 87 - and won the class. The judge came out of the booth and said it was the best handy round he had seen in a long while.

We then read the directions and started back at the P1+++ and P2+++ and didn't see nearly the same result, but I wanted to give it a good try. I then switched to P1+++ and P3+++ , late December, early January, after a few weeks out of the machine,  since we were shipping to Florida  December 1st. Just last week I went back to the P1+++ and P4+++ and again, a different horse, jumping so much better. I put it on him at night and he was sleeping when I arrived at 6:00am. I got him up to ride in the ring for 5 mins and put the machine back on him. Again, he laid down and ate. About 2 hours later, I got him up for a 10 minute lunge, bathed him, then put the machine back on until his 2:30pm class. The video is below......

FINALLY,
He seems to be confident, yet without being "TOO" confident.
Letting me ride him, instead of vice versa....
Listening to me, instead of "thinking for the both of us"...
"Responding" quietly, not "REACTING".....

He finished in 4th place at The Winter Equestrian Festival, in Wellington FL, behind 3 horses that were purchased for a million dollars each......!!

What is Microcurrent and what does it actually do?

Here at ArcEquine HQ we are often asked how our machine works and what exactly is the technology used. We are very proud of our ARC and have had fantastic results from it, however we understand that you don't just want to "take our word for it". It is important that you know how this works and how it will help you and your horse.

So what actually is microcurrent?
Microcurrent introduces very low-level electrical currents into your body through 2 electrode pads applied to the skin. What is a microcurrent we hear you ask? At its simplest, a microcurrent is an electrical current measured in millionths of an amp or µA. It’s perfectly safe and can’t be felt, in the same way you can’t feel your body’s own natural bio-currents because they are similar in strength. How is this possible? The aim of Microcurrent is to support and aid the body's own natural healing process. Microcurrents occur naturally within the body and they are vital for the production of ATP which moves essential substances in and out of the cells, while simultaneously boosting the body's absorption of amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), which are an essential component of tissue repair.

What is ATP?
Apart from being a killer word in Scrabble, ATP is Adenosine Triphosphate. This is the molecule used by all living cells to provide a constant supply of energy which enables them to carry out all necessary cellular functions. ATP is formed from an Adenosine molecule with three phosphate molecules bonded to it, hence the ‘tri’ in the name.The energy stored in ATP is released when the bond holding the third phosphate molecule to the rest of the ATP molecule is broken. The product of this process is Adenosine DiPhosphate (ADP) and a separate phosphate molecule (Pi). During cellular respiration, the bond between this phosphate and the ADP is re-made, thus reforming a molecule of ATP. In this way, ATP in our cells is constantly being broken down and re-formed in order to provide them with an unending energy source. 

How does ArcEquine use microcurrent?  
Turn it on, pick a programme, press play – done. For us, what an ArcEquine does isn’t the most impressive part. It was the years of inventive development and research, producing the 120 prototypes to test and refine it and the massive investment needed to make something so complicated so simple. ArcEquine is a wearable, non-invasive, drug free device. On one hand it’s the same size as the smaller disposable devices, yet can be charged and is far more sophisticated. Microcurrent vs TENS
There is no such thing as Microcurrent versus TENS as they are so different except for the fact that they both use electricity, but then again, so does a toaster. Microcurrent speaks an entirely different language to the body because it uses a current 1,000 times lower, which is why you can’t feel our devices. To classify as a microcurrent, the current must be being measured within the millionths of an amp range. Whilst TENS devices are effective, they produce currents that are considerably stronger, so they can’t do the same things as the body’s own naturally occurring microcurrents.
